Investigating Volcanoes

 

The fourth graders blew bubbles in ‘lava’ to compare thick and thin lava.  The bubbles showed how the two lavas explode differently and form different types of volcanoes.  The thick lava was hard to blow in, and the bubble would pop right away.  The thin lava was easy when we blew, and it fizzed up. 

 

We had to get a plate and make volcanoes using each type of lava.  The lava was made out of water, flour, and red food coloring.  We observed how the lava flowed and decided whether the volcanoes were cone or shield volcanoes.

 

On our cone volcano, the bubbles got stuck on the top.  A real cone volcano has thick lava.  The lava piles up and makes a tall volcano with steep sides.  The thin lava leaked down our shield volcano.  The lava spews all over instead of piling up. A real shield volcano has long sides.  It is not very tall.
